Diego Garcia Best of the Bunch
[Home]  [Back to Diego Garcia]  [Diego Garcia List of all Pages]

This page  contains the pictures that I think are my best of each shooting since arriving here on the Island of Diego Garcia. Generally they are in the order they were taken and so hopefully you see some improvement as you work your way down the page. This is a very long page and is going to take a while to load especially if you have a dialup connection, I apologize for that, but that's just the nature of pictures. You may notice that I have a lot of night photographs at first, This is explained by two things. First as I have a rotating shift, and I have more time off at night than during the day so I needed something to do at night. Secondly night photography is a lot of fun because you have the ability to manipulate the light in the picture, and the long exposures create neat effects such as blurring the ocean waves into a white sheet or stretching the clouds or isolating an object. I still greatly enjoy night photograph but I thought that I should also start working with daytime, sunrise and sunset photographs. I cant really say I have a favorite time to take photographs, but I guess I prefer any time the light isn't quite like daylight, something that just makes the ordinary daytime images come more alive or more subtle.
2004

These are the crabs that started the revolt, but many others have joined them.

Beach near the fuelpod area.

Overlooking the lagoon in early morning.

Cannon Point at night.

The sky is different colors on different nights, its hard to tell with your eyes but the film can capture it with long exposures. Also different films have different effects the longer they are exposed. I mentioned earlier being able to manipulate the light, Despite all the things I can do, I cant manipulate the light from the sky or the light reflected off the ocean. In order to manipulate the light you need to be able to shine a colored light of some sort on the subject. I generally use an external flash and cover it with a colored plastic. Here I used the flash with no color so it is just plain white light on the beach and myself. The color of the sky and ocean are the true colors they were on the film.

Cannon Point pavilion at night. Notice the star trails?

Cannon Point beach at night.

Looking at BEQ 14 (where I live) from Cannon Point.

Point Marrianne Cemetery.

Sunset overlooking Cannon Point from BEQ 14 beach.

Cable & Wireless satellite antenna arrays.

Pavilion across from the downtown fire department.

This is the same pavilion, to make it look like this I turned the light off and used an external flash covered with yellow plastic  and placed it on the ground pointed upward about  5 feet in front of the pavilion.

I "painted" this tree green by flashing it several times with an external flash covered with green plastic, the sky and moon are the true colors they were on the film.

Beach photo behind Seabreeze Village at night.

Fuel pods at night.

Crumbling stone Building at lagoon end of runway.

2005

Marina at night.

Tugboat dry-docked for dismembering.

Brit patrol boat at harbor.

Peninsula and beach at nigh. I kind of rather like night photos if you cant tell.

Stingray at Turtle Cove.

Sunset at R-Site

Turtle at Turtle Cove.

Sidewalk behind the Ship Store. Guess when! Yep that's right, at night.

Harbor Ops.

Storage "tents"

I had a little fun "painting" these tents, I had to walk up and down and  flash each tent something like 20 times with the color I wanted it to be. This picture took about 5 minutes to expose.

Moon through the tree.

Camp Justice flags in early morning.

Fishing boat that the Brit B.I.O.T Police and Royal Marines confiscated.

Soccer field across from the Beach House.

Sunrise on the western side of the island.

Downtown fire department.

Late evening outside the fire department.

2006

The pictures of these birds were taken on my tip to tip bike ride.

Coconut Crabs so named for their love of cracking open and eating of coconuts. I have the belief that given the chance they may eat small children or the limb of a large adult, and B.I.O.T.'s warning to leave them alone has more to do with our safety than theirs.

A Feral Donkey rulers of the East.

The plantations main house.

Inside the blacksmith shop at the plantation.

Outside of the blacksmith shop.

Turtle Cove during mid tide, during high tide you cant get near the channel as the land around it is submerged in anywhere from a couple of inches of water to a couple of feet.

Fallen Coconut frond.

Bike trail through the brush and brambles.

One of many Bike/Walking trails.

Coconut canopy.

These Trees are near the plantation, I don't know what kind they are but notice how they grow out over the beach and the lagoon, they keep their roots just above the water level. Pretty nifty if you ask me.

One of the old plantation buildings, I have no idea what it was.

The old pier at the plantation. It may need some repair before its used again.

Church of the Sacred Heart.

Inside the Copra Warehouse.

The old Jail, quite an unpleasant place to stay. The Brits and Navy have newer shinier ones for the comfort and enjoyment of the modern prisoner.

Looking out the shuddered window of one of the old buildings.

One side of the veranda on the plantations main house.

Inside the "Company Store" at the plantation. The selection is quite limited these days.

2007

The plantation houses front veranda.

Inside the plantation church.

One of the rooms inside the the plantation house. The furniture though as worn as the house is all original.

Looking through the back windows of the plantation house.

The RAF had a squadron of these Catalina Flying Boats stationed here in 1944, they had a few less of them though after a cyclone hit, it sank some and beached this one much to the amusement of many a Diego Garcian.

Ghost Crab so named for their ability to quickly disappear.

A pristine beach at low tide, makes you want to take off your shoos and run along it just for the sheer joy. And then go see medical for the sheer pain. Many are the beach with plenty of sand though, just not so much right here.

Its a nice setting, but you only get the ocean around it during high tide, during low tide the ocean is a couple hundred feet away.

Another crab, this one didn't want to cooperate and walk around like I wasn't hovering over him. Despite all my coaxing, poking, prodding, and yelling he just wanted to stay in his shell and not move.

Tree along the beach.

Ok I just like this picture of the driftwood; But it is on Diego Garcia, almost right out in front of my barracks so it counts as a picture of Diego.

Propositioned cargo ship in the lagoon before sunrise.

Another cargo ship in the lagoon before sunrise, same day.

Hole in the sky # 1. I like the way the hole just sort of  opens up above the island. This little island is one of three that are in the the mouth of the lagoon.

Not sure just what this used to be or why it was where it was, but this one link of chain is about as long as my arm, Looks as though it could of at one time been used for mooring something large to something even larger, even though its not really in a place where that would seem to be practical.

Sunrise over the lagoon.

Hole in the sky #2. This hole in the sky had a lot more color to it than the first one and more layers of clouds though it didn't want to center over the little island  in the center of the opening to the lagoon. The pictures were taken on different mornings just in case you couldn't tell by the coloring.

This picture was taken earlier in the morning than the one above it which is why you get those neat light streaks. It was still dark enough that it took several seconds to expose.

Sunrise from the Seaman's Service Center beach.

Yes that's me. Don't you wish you were here?

Yes I kind of got stuck on ships for a couple of days, but there just isn't that much else above water in the lagoon, and you have to admit they make interesting subjects during the sunrise.

Old settlement buildings at Point Marrianne

This picture may not be all that spectacular, but the tree is.
These giant trees are also located at Point Marrianne, you may not be able to tell it from this picture, but that branch in the front is thicker than I am tall.
Sunrise over the Lagoon.
Black Napped Tern at Sunrise.

Coconut Trees in mid morning sun.

Light from the evening sunset reflects off pockets of trapped water left behind by the receding ocean tides.
The sun sets over the rough coral  beach during low tide.

Two flags, Two nations, the strength of Two militaries, One Island.
